When I first started working, as a teenager, the mission was: take the first job that offered to hire me, do whatever they told me, and make friends with my coworkers. At 17 years old I applied at the BurgerKing down the road purely because they had a “Now Hiring” sign displayed and it occured to me that I needed money (Job Impulse Shopping). I quickly rose in the ranks from ‘Fry Girl’ to self-titled ‘Drive-Thru Princess’. I was sitting pretty in one of the preferable roles and with the experience of a couple months giving me the authority to boss the rest of the team around. I never thought about raises, advancement, benefits, retirement plans, or self-fulfillment. I was just eager to get money at the end of each week for gas, food, movies, and various high school related expenses.

Now, it’s not about finding A job. It’s about finding THE RIGHT job. Or rather, the right career. A position that will lead to other, better positions. It’s really exhausting. I’ve been hovering for a quite a while on the question of whether or not I’ve stalled in my current career path. Does my company have room for me to grow or should I move elsewhere? Is it worth the risk to lose my seniority and a very solid job in this economic environment? Right now I’m in a holding pattern while I consider it but my eyes are open to other opportunities out there.

It would be so much easier to worry only about whether or not I’ll have to work on Saturday and the nuisance of complaining customers. I miss working at Burgerking sometimes.
